Month 1 Summary – Portfolio Value £5,924

I must apologise, I really am a fair-weather blogger. Looking over my daily updates during the first month of our little quest to net a million, it must appear that Investor Trader has been a resounding success. Of the seven updates I’ve written, six have claimed capital gains on the day – unrealised, though they are. But if you take a careful look at the reality of things, it’s a little closer to 60-40 in favour of the good days.

Overall though, some of the good days have been very good, which has seen total capital appeciate, by in the region of £900. Now I’m no mathematician but if I’ve made £900 in one month and we’re to travel 60 months on this little project, then we’re looking in the region of a £54,000 portfolio come 2014 (our end date). Now that’s no mean feat, but I’ve still got to up my game by a factor of 18.5 if I want hit the magical million. It’s a big ask!

All things being equal, over time our portfolio should grow as income starts to kick in and I can invest more heavily but a lot of it will come down to market conditions.

If – as I hope – that market has bottomed out and we’ve got some good times ahead, then I’m confident we can make some big gains in the months to come. If there’s more downside in the offing, then it’ll be a real test of my investing abilities (hard swallow).

Whatever happens, I hope you’ll join me as I try to make Investor Trader a success for me personally and Kiva, the charity I’ll be supporting.

Setting Up for Online Earnings

While the London Markets take a well-earned breather for the May Day long weekend, I’ve been hard at work adding content, earning potential and setting up a few social media connections to Investor Trader in an attempt to jump start this little project.

I’ve kicked things off with the staple of online earners – Google Adsense – and followed up with a couple of little affiliate programs, Wall Street Survivor – a fantasy stock trading game – and, ADVFN – an investment portal that offers, amongst a range of financial services, the Holy Grail of the online investor, free real-time London share prices.

The portfolio page now tracks market data (on a 15 minute delay) so we can all see the value of the Investor Trader portfolio at any given time. Clicking on any of the share names or EPIC codes of any equities listed within the portfolio will now take you through to page dedicated to that particular company.

On the social media front, we’re up and running on Twitter, though tweets are few and far between and we’ve kicked off on MyBlogLog.

Bring on the trading week!

Investor Trader Finds its Aim

Launch of a Website Mk. II

So I’ve been sitting on this Investor Trader site for a while now. I make a comfortable living online through a handful of a travel sites (and a little freelance to boot) and whilst I have an interest in investing and trading, it’s far from an area of expertise (in fact if you graphed my ROI from the past decade, you’d be within your rights to argue that even interest is quite a strong term; to the contrary, it would seem that I’m committed to giving wads of my hard-earned to business-men in ten thousand pound suits to do with what they will). But more on that later.

So originally – when economic times were rosier (2005) – I thought, hell, why not, let’s poke a toe in the investment/trading online waters and see what comes of it. Unfortunately, at the time, it was a toe and no more. I set up a structure for the site, added a little advertising, played around adding a couple of dozen links through to some big players in the UK financial markets and then let it sit.

It was a second rate financial directory, nothing more. I had other more pressing matters (8 other websites to tend to for starters) and Investor Trader was far from a priority. I hadn’t expected anything to come from it and that’s what I got, nada!

Fast forward, 2009. Whilst the financial world tumbles and spins (my meagre portfolio with it) I got to thinking that maybe it was time to re-visit this little project but this time committed with a clearly-stated, quantifiable aim! Yes, an aim can make any project worthwhile, I assured myself. So rather than adding to the disappointing directory, I sat down with pen and paper and decided to swing plan Investor Trader into action. The ink’s still drying but I’ll be posting my aims and goals for Investor Trader Mk II online in the next day or two. Stay tuned…
